Join us this July for Sing with the Trees, an immersive vocal music retreat held beneath the Northern California redwoods and rooted in ancient and contemporary practices of group singing.

Guided by Matt Goldstein, Anilee List, Asher Blank, and Max Hart, we’ll be gathering a group of 40-70 singers with the intention of connecting with each other and our natural surroundings through both structured and spontaneous song.

MUSIC

Forest Choir

We’ll put together a pair of camp-wide One-Day Choirs, singing arrangements by Matt and Asher.

Circle Songs

We’ll spin up spontaneous Circle Songs, invented & led on-the-spot by facilitators & participants.

Root Circles

We’ll spend time in smaller Root Circles, small groups of 6-12 singers, to provide space for more intimate connection, singing, sharing, and relationship-building.

Song Seeds

We’ll learn layer songs by ear and create space to experiment with writing our own short, looping pieces.

Throughout the weekend we might also sing songs around the campfire or wander the woods silently, listening for the music of the trees.

What do the trees have to teach us? During our time together, we’ll behold these beings and their ecosystem through the lenses of local wisdom, environmental science, and our own evolving relationships to this special place.

GUIDES

Each of our guides comes to Sing with the Trees with a unique musical voice and approach to community singing, while sharing a deep commitment to creating open, welcoming, and expressive spaces.

MATT GOLDSTEIN (he/him)
choir, circlesinging, tree-climbing, star-gazing

Matt is an NYC-based choir director, educator, facilitator, vocal arranger, singer-songwriter, and improviser known for his heart-forward facilitation, emotive arrangements, and visionary leadership. He is the founder and Artistic Director of Gaia Music Collective, a collaborative music community that is achieving international recognition for its work in creating inclusive, accessible spaces for everyday folks to pursue musical expression & connection. Beyond Gaia, he directs at A Cappella Academy, leads Rock Voices Brooklyn Heights, teaches improvisation through his studio Flow Labs, and performs globally with his international vocal improv trio, Ecca. At Sing with the Trees, Matt will be leading circlesinging, vocal improvisation, and offering an arrangement for the Forest Choir. Matt’s Instagram

ANILEE LIST
(she/her)
circlesinging, song seeds, frolicking, stretching, moving

Anilee is a passionate performer, session vocalist, songwriter, group singing facilitator, and voice teacher. She recently returned to her hometown of Los Angeles from a year-long tour with Olivia Rodrigo and is currently singing on tour with Yebba. She spends her time facilitating her workshop Song Seeds, recording and performing her original music, and helping people along their vocal journeys. At Sing with the Trees, Anilee will be facilitating circlesongs and leading Song Seeds. Anilee’s Instagram

ASHER BLANK (he/him)
choir, wandering, listening

Asher is a composer and producer whose music-making consists of two parallel practices in close conversation: creating choral music and producing electronic music. Inspired by music-makers like Steve Reich, Bobby McFerrin, and Caroline Shaw, his work digests and reimagines a diverse collection of musical traditions in search of new shapes and feelings. He lives in Los Angeles, where he leads Ephemeral Choir and arranges choral music for ensembles around the world. At Sing with the Trees, he’ll be offering the Forest Choir a new piece of music. MAX HART (they/them)
camping, tree-climbing, hiking, singing, being

Max is a devoted outdoor creature with a deep reverence for the natural world, shaped by over a decade of wilderness backpacking including a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. They believe deeply in the power of communal music-making to help people connect with each other and the earth, which is exactly what led them here. When not singing with the trees (or climbing them), Max works as a leadership coach and facilitator, helping people find their footing in themselves and their work. As Camp Guide for Sing with the Trees, they hold a Wilderness First Responder certification and are the person you'll want to find if you need anything at all over the weekend. Max’s Instagram

We’re excited to be bringing Sing with the Trees to Sacred Earth Retreat in Ben Lomond, California.

Tucked into the redwood forest, Sacred Earth Retreat is a spectacular indoor-outdoor facility stewarded by a group of artists and professionals. SER is accessible via a 30-minute drive from Santa Cruz and a 90-minute drive from Berkeley.  (We’ll coordinate as much car-pooling as we can!)

We’ll be camping on different sections of the property, bringing our own tents and making ourselves at home in the outdoors, or sleeping in SER’s 12-person yurt, for those who are comfortable sharing sleeping space. Throughout our stay we’ll also have limited access to showers, bathrooms, and a kitchen area.
